Arrived Quebec, Canada, 1 June 1776. Principal engagements: Ticonderoga, Hubbardton, Bennington,  Freeman's  Farm,  Bemis Heights, Saratoga. In accord with contemporary military doctrine the Grenadier companies of the German regiments under Burgoyne were combined to form a single Grenadier battalion for use at critical times and places during battle.  The Grenadiers were usually selected for dependability, experience, and physique. The Grenadier caps, originally designed to minimize interference with grenade throwing, eventually assumed a height of 11 or more inches. The cloth portion, usually the color of the regimental facings, was held in position with whalebone strips stitched under wide worsted tape. The metal front plate, white or gilt, was embossed with the royal cypher of Duke Carl of Brunswick over the white horse and motto for the Brunswick Regts. and with the royal cypher of Count Wilhelm of Hesse for the Hesse-Hanau Regt. Additional embossing included grenades and military trophies. Contemporary American, British and German accounts give frequent mention of the many and varied pets acquired by the German troops.
