Arrived
Quebec, Canada, 17 Sept. 1776. Principal engagements: Ticonderoga, Hubbardton,
Freeman's Farm, Bemis Heights, Saratoga. Attached to Lt. Col. von Barner's
Light Infantry Battalion during entire Burgoyne Cainpaign. Under direct
control of Commanding General for military operations. An elite corps
of selected rangers and marksmen, predominantly sons of German
State-Forest-Rangers. Arms: German rifles of excellent quality and straight
hunting swords (hangers). Equipment and leggings of brown leather. Coat
and waistcoat, traditional Jaeger green with white metal buttons, scarlet
lapels, collar, cuffs and left shoulder strap. White worsted aigulettes
for the enlisted men, worn on right shoulder. Buff leather breeches and
gauntlets. Green worsted sword-knot, green and white hat-cord, green cockade
with black loop and white metal button. Officers' buttons, aigulettes and
cockade loop were silver. Their hat-cord and sword-knot were green silk
interwoven with silver threads. Officers jack-boots were soft legged with
stiff knee-cuff and foot.
