Scout
6th Continentals, Mass
- Whitcomb's Rangers, Fort Ti.
January 1777
.
Early
in January 1777 scouting parties were ordered up the shores of Lake Champlain
to guard against a surprise attack across the ice. This picture shows a
typical Massachusetts soldier from the 6th Continental Infantry known as
Colonel Asa Whitcomb's "Rangers." He wears a blue seaman's jacket and the
high cocked seaman's hat of the period, with buckskin leggings and moccasins.
He carries a "committee of safety" musket and a light pack with blanket
and rations for three days as prescribed in general orders of 7th January,
1777.
