On
the 23rd July, 1776, general orders were issued to detail men for service
as Marines and Seamen with the fleet forming on Lake Champlain. The Congress
ordered additional pay of eight shillings per month for each non-commissioned
officer so detailed. The sergeant shown in this picture is from Colonel
John Philip de Haas's 1st Pennslvania Battalion, of the 4th Brigade. He
wears the red worsted epaulet on the right shoulder as insignia of rank.
He is armed with a blunderbuss for close fighting. All the blunderbusses
were turned over to the fleet for that purpose by general order dated 16th
August, 76.
