The Egyptian Obelisk
-- "Cleopatra's Needle" in Central Park, presented to New York by Ismail
Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, in 1877; granite, 69 feet high, weighs 230 tons;
transported across the seas at the expense of the late Wm. H. Vanderbilt.
Erected 3,500 years ago by King Thothmes III, with the hieroglyphic titles
on it of Thothmes and Rameses II; probably familiar to Moses and the Israelites
in bondage in Egypt.
